TJ Maxx Nail Polish Haul

I Bought This

In a nail polish Facebook group I belong to, the ladies are always posting pictures of gorgeous polishes they find at TJ Maxx. I recently discovered one near me, so I decided to try my luck and go hunting for polish bargains.

Happily, I found a little section with some very inexpensive pretties! The OPIs were$7.99 for a set of two liquid sands and $3.99 for the individual polishes. The ORLY FX was $3.99 and the NOPIs were $2.99 each.

L-R: OPI Get Your Number, OPI Can't Let Go, OPI Solitare, OPI Pussy Galore

L-R: OPI Yodel Me On My Cell, OPI Gouda Gouda Two Shoes, ORLY FX Fight On, NOPI You're An Angel, NOPI She's Lily Something

The liquid sands are my first texture polishes and I'm excited to try them out! I already used Can't Let Go for a pedicure and it is amazing. I want to do a mani with Solitare and Pussy Galore next, so hopefully they work out well together.

Have you found any polish at your TJ Maxx? I'm on the hunt for some SpaRitual polishes. Any recommendations on places to find cheap polish?

e.l.f. Glossy Gloss - Berry Blush, Tangy Tangerine and Dragonfruit.

Recently e.l.f. had a 50% sale on Studio products, so I thought I'd try out these glosses. I have so many lip products, but mostly wear tinted balms or glosses, so I wanted to get a few new colours. These three are great shades that I think will transition nicely from Summer to Fall/Autumn.

Berry Blush is a soft mauve pink, Tangy Tangerine is a muted orange and Dragonfruit is a brighter, coral pink. They look quite opaque, but the colour didn't translate quite as well on my pigmented lips.

Berry Blush

Tangy Tangerine

Dragonfruit

As you can see, Tangy Tangerine was the least opaque on my lips, while Dragonfruit was the most opaque. Berry Blush is a nice, MLBB glossy shade which looks lovely as a neutral pink. Tangy Tangerine would be great as a gloss over more opaque orange lipsticks or stains, which might need a little extra moisturisation or shine.

The texture is quite thick and sticky, which means they last a reasonable amount of time. I reapplied after about 3/4 hours, which isn't too bad for a gloss. They hydrate nicely and don't leave any greasy feeling residue on the lips. They are also great for dry lips, as they glide over any dry or flaky patches you might have, and don't emphasise fine lines. At 50% off, I got these for $1.50 each at the e.l.f. website. For the price, they are definitely a steal!

I have a bunch of other stuff from my e.l.f. Studio haul, so look out for more reviews to come :)
Have you tried any e.l.f. Glossy Glosses? I also want to try their Hypershine gloss range.

My Picks from the Missha Semi-Annual Big Summer Sale: 30-50% off

Yay, I love a big sale! I got an email this morning about the Missha Summer sale, which has 30-50% off everything. I went and checked out the sale and found my picks, which I will most likely be purchasing.

The Style Leopard Nail Polish
PRICE : $6.99 $3.5

Yes, it's another crackle polish. But the pattern and the different colours you can get make this one unique, IMO. And for $3.50, I think I can afford to pick a few up :) Probably the pink and orange!

PRICE : $29.99 $17.99

Everyone's favourite BB cream (well mine, anyway) in a LE set. One full size BB cream and a 10ml travel size. I need one of those travel sized tubes, so much more convenient to keep in your purse.

PRICE : $54.98 $27.49

BB Boomer is like a primer for the BB cream. It helps to set the BB cream, increase longevity and gives a dewy glow. This price for both of them is cheaper than the regular price of just the BB cream, so it's a good deal.

PRICE : $12.99 $7.79

I've been wanting to try this lipstick for a while, but I couldn't get past the $13 price tag..... YES we all know I'm cheap lol. The shades look really pretty and I've heard some good things about it, pigmentation-wise. The shades I want to try are BE204, CR310 and PK114.

PRICE : $4.99 $2.99

A $3 nail polish that's touted by one reviewer as being better than OPI? Yes, please. I've heard nothing but great things about this polish and there are some really pretty shades. I can't wait to try some of them for myself.

Well, those are the things that caught my attention and I will most probably be picking up this weekend. Let me know if you get anything from the sale! Missha have some great sales, so to keep up to date you should sign up to their email subscription. You also get a free gift with your first purchase, right now it's their BB Boomer.

Like I've said before, Missha does not compensate me for posting about them (although as one reader said, maybe they should! :p). I just like the brand and like sharing with you.

Vente Privee - Designer Brands for Discount Prices.

Through She Speaks, I recently discovered a members only shopping website (similar to those I've used in the past) that is strictly high-fashion, designer brands up to 70% off. Vente-Privee has a bunch of high-end products at probably the lowest prices I've seen on one of these members only websites.

How does it work? You sign up, it's free to join, and you receive emails with the sales of that day which are limited quantity so you have to get in quick.

Here's an example of some of the designer products that are available on the site:

Badgley Mischka pumps - $215 $85

Badgley Mischka pumps -  $200  $78

Calvin Klein sunglasses -  $265  $65

Calvin Klein sunglasses -  $191  $58

The sales change all the time, so you always have the opportunity to access different designers and different types of products. I don't usually buy designer brands, simply because they're out of my budget, but I have been eyeing those CK sunglasses.

Have you tried Vente-Privee before? Or any other members only shopping sites? Are you inclined to?

The Double Braid

How-to:
  • These braids are a twist on the classic French braid and are actually called inside out French braids

  • Incorporate hair closest to the hairline braiding back towards the ear
  • Secure the braid with a bobby pin
  • Gather three sections of adjacent hair and repeat
  • Once braids are secure, pull hair back into a bun
  • Accessorize with a clip-in flower, feathers or a hair clip

Messy Side Bun

How-to:
  • Pull hair into a low side bun and secure with an elastic
  • Take the ponytail and gather hair into a ball in your hands
  • Secure using an elastic and wrapping it a few times
  • Pull hair at the roots to add some volume

Flawless Ballerina Bun

How-to:
  • Secure hair in a high ponytail
  • Tease the ponytail to add volume
  • Twist hair clockwise into a tight bun, leaving about an inch of hair out at the bottom
  • Secure bun with large bobby pins
  • Wrap remaining hair around once and pin it or leave it out for a messier look

Last minute gifts: my faves at Forever 21.

Hey Beauties! It’s almost Christmas!

I usually get all the big ticket items a month early, but 2 days before Christmas I always end up frantically looking for small last minute gifts. If you're like me and need some inspiration, here's a few things I picked up from Forever 21 for small gifts/stocking stuffers/hostess gifts that are easy and much nicer than boring bath sets.

Forever 21 has so many cute and inexpensive accessories that would be perfect for gifts. I picked up these furry earmuffs for $3 each.

DSC_0227

Aren’t they gorgeous??

This lovely necklace was $3.80

DSC_0233

These super cute earrings were only $1.50 each!

DSC_0231

I don't remember exactly how much this necklace was... but it was under $5. It's on their website anyway.

DSC_0245

Bow hair clips, $1.50 wtf.

DSC_0242

You could mix and match with these and come up with an awesome little fashion gift basket.

They also have a lot of really cute beauty products, like these pretty nail polishes (you might have seen them in my header!) and bronzer

DSC_0355

DSC_0385

I haven't bought any yet, but their facial masks look really good and like they would smell fabulous. A few of those with some nail polish and a mini manicure set could make a great spa basket for a hostess gift.

I love Forever 21, because they have such a huge selection of accessories and cosmetics that are under $5. Getting gifts there is a definite Christmas Moneysaver and we all know we could stand to cut down a little on our holiday spending. And let’s face it… I’m cheap. I have of a lot of people I want to buy gifts for and I’m not rich :’( the less money I spend the better.

Have you done all your Christmas shopping yet? I think I’m done… actually I think I bought too much stuff for myself =_=

Review: Red Carpet Manicure at-home gel system

Hey Beauties!

It’s Halloween time again… I am seeing the beauty blogs stuffed to overflowing with Halloween makeup and nail posts and I’m here to add my 2 cents :D

DSC_1095

I was recently sent the Red Carpet Manicure Starter kit to try and I thought it would be great to use for my Halloween manicure as it’d be long lasting (hopefully.. I’ll let you know next week!) and I have a number of different events to go to. I’ve been super excited to try out this at-home gel system, as I LOVE gel nails but don’t really want to pay to go to a salon every time I want to get them done (when my lovely friend Mai isn’t available… I don’t think she loves me any more ;_; just kidding!). I know a few nail bloggers have been DIYing gel manicures for a while now, but all those systems are really intended for professional use only and I’m far from a professional. So with the Red Carpet Manicure system being marketed as ‘at-home’ gel system, it immediately piqued my interest. Total Money Saver!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
From Red Carpet Manicure:
image
Red Carpet Manicure is the first of its kind in the retail market bringing the professional
salon experience to the masses. With 36 different shades and a portable or professional LED
light, consumers now have an affordable, easy and safe way to have beautiful gel nails
within minutes that lasts for weeks!
A full system costs $57.94, which works out $2.90 each for twenty at-home applications compared to an average of $40.00 for each professional application in the salon. (Note: Don’t know why it says $57.94 when the starter kit is $59.99.. maybe I’m missing something? – Ishah)
Step 1: Prep
Prep Max Adhesion Sanitizer: $3.99
Step 2: Care & Color
Structure Base Coat Gel: $9.99
LED Gel Polish (36 shades): $9.99
Brilliance Seal and Shine Top Coat: $9.99
Step 3: Finish
Revitalize Nourishing Cuticle Oil: $3.99
Purify (Pre and Post Application Cleanser): $3.99
Step 4: Removal
Erase Gel Polish Remover: $3.99
Lights and Starter kits:
Pro:45 Light: $49.99
Portable LED Light: $19.99
Starter kit with professional light: $79.99
Starter kit with portable light: $59.99
Accessories kit: $3.99
Tips for application:
  • Apply thin coats
  • Cure after each coat of polish (base coat, color, brilliance top coat, etc.)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I received the Starter kit with portable light (battery operated, whereas the pro light is plugged into the wall). It seems like a lot of steps, but if you don’t prep the nail properly, it won’t stay on as long.

First of all let me say, application is so easy.
Because the gel doesn’t dry until you cure it under the light, you have as much time in the world to apply it on the nail and correct any mistakes you might (I did) have made. I’m far from being a manicure expert, but this was extremely difficult.. to get wrong. (In other words, IT’S SUPER EASY!). Make sure you do thin coats, as if it's too thick it can run into the edge of your nail, look uneven and thick and also peels off more easily.

The first couple of times it may take a little longer than a regular manicure, but once you get more used to the differences, it’s pretty quick and painless. I did get a bit restless waiting the 2 minutes for each coat to cure, but once it’s dry, it’s hard as a rock. No smudging and having to redo your whole hand. Also, for the impatient ones, you can get the professional light which only needs 45 seconds to cure each coat. It’s a bit more expensive, but it really does cut that time down. I am seriously considering purchasing it myself, just because it’s a lot faster and I have an extremely short attention span.

One thing: since this is gel, it does not remove like regular nail polish (no matter how much it looks like nail polish in that bottle!). I made the stupid mistake of putting the Brilliance topcoat on instead of the Structure basecoat and had to remove it.. AFTER I already cured it. Took a little while, which surprised me – I guess I was still thinking in terms of regular polish. So yeah, one thing the company could do is make the topcoat and basecoat bottles a little different (for simple people like me… =_=).

EDIT: One thing to note - some of the brushes on the bottles were a bit wonky and had some hairs sticking out that made application difficult. Might just be new production issues, but I passed that info onto them anyway.

My Halloween costume this year is a school girl, so I wanted something simple and sweet looking to complement the outfit. The skirt is pink, so I used Red Carpet Manicure (RCM) After Party Playful, which is a soft, bubblegum pink. This is 2 coats.

DSC_1082

For the accent nail I used RCM Candid Moment (from their Bridal collection) as a base and then used a dotting tool and one of my Color Club unnamed pink polishes for the flowers. The dot in the centre is Konad white and red special polish mixed together…. don’t ask. I was having a hard time finding the right colour.

DSC_1056

I noticed some patchiness here and there and not sure if it’s just my newbie application… The box says only 2 coats of colour are needed, so maybe it is user error? Or maybe the lighter colours just turn out like that? Not sure, but it’s not really noticeable in real life, only on camera. I’ll have to try some of the darker colours and see if it makes a difference.

I wanted to try something a little more ‘hardcore’ Halloween, so I pulled inspiration from my favourite TV show (The Vampire Diaries) and did dripping with blood ‘Vampire’ nails. This would work a lot better with long nails, but I recently had to cut mine down ;_; As it is I think it looks pretty cool! I used RCM Candid Moment as a base and RCM Glitz & Glamorous (from their Holiday collection) for the blood drops. I think next year I’ll be Katherine (The Vampire Diaries) and have long talons dripping with glittery blood! Hey, you could still do it, I won’t be mad at you ;)

Some Halloween suggestions from the red Carpet Manicure team:

  • For a spooky and trendy look, try a reverse French manicure with our “Black Stretch Limo” shade.

  • Dressing up in an 80’s themed costume this year with friends? Check out Red Carpet Manicure’s hot pink shade “Paparazzied”.

Red Carpet Manicure products are available at ULTA who are having a 20% off sale now thru Saturday Oct 30, with free shipping on purchases over $50.

They also have a Facebook page where you can see lots of photos and posts from people that have tried the products.

I'll be doing another post on the Red Carpet Manicure system and Autumn/Winter nail trends next week, so stay tuned!

What are you dressing up as for Halloween? Are you dressing up your nails as well?

Brand New Missha BB Cream shade - No. 27 Honey Beige!

View my review and BB Cream comparision with No. 23, No. 27 and No. 31!

Ok, so by now you should all know how much I love my Missha Perfect Cover BB Cream.

Missha is the only brand making a wider variety of shades in BB Cream (for darker skin!) and they've just introduced a new shade, #27 Honey Beige. I'm thinking this may have to be a purchase for me, since #23 is still a little light for me even in Winter months. Lucky for me (and my wallet) they are having a 4 day promo, from today July 20 - July 24 and the BB Cream is only $8.99 + $8.99 shipping & handling ($17.98, which works out way cheaper than any price I've seen for Perfect Cover BB Cream). They also have free shipping for orders over $40, which is pretty great.

Here is the promo email I got:

The offer is limited to one per order.

I'm pretty excited about this (sad, I know) so I had to share :) I'm hoping the other brands (Skin79 etc) will jump on the wagon and release a few darker shades for those of us without milky complexions. I'm interested to see which company will start doing a BB Cream for ladies on the darker end of the colour spectrum, as they have been completely neglected so far. I do give props to Missha for being ahead of the game though.

Do you own any BB Cream? What is your shade, and are you happy to see Missha bringing out darker tones?

NOTE: I am not paid or compensated to share this offer with you. I have not been contacted or asked to post this by PR for the company.

EDIT: Minutes after posting this.... I bought the BB Cream.  Yes, I know.. I have no willpower :) So stay tuned and I will post a review/swatches/FOTD as soon as it comes in the mail!

Sinful Colors Star Fish: O.P.I. Sparrow Me The Drama dupe?

Recently there's been a lot of buzz in the nail polish blogosphere about this collection from Sinful Colors and whether the colours are dupes (blatant rip offs?) of OPI's Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides collection.

sinful

(FYI I think only the 5 shades pictured in the poster are part of the ‘Adventure Island’ collection.. the others didn’t have ‘sea’ themed names and were probably put there just to fill the display)

Review: e.l.f. Studio Cream Eyeliner in Plum Purple

I’m an eyeliner girl. I’m pretty much addicted. For years, it was the one thing I'd have to be wearing before I left the house (now it's mascara! but I still love me some eyeliner). Black, brown, gold, blue, green, I love ‘em all. I’ve lined my waterline for as long as I’ve been using makeup, and I used to like doing winged liner because it made my eyes look more ‘asian’ (ok I still do that).

I’ve used a few different types (pencil, liquid, felt tip, gel) and there are pros and cons to all of them. Cream or gel eyeliner is easy to use and pigmented, but can be prone to creasing and fading so I don’t often use it.

I had read some good reviews about the e.l.f. Studio Cream Eyeliner online, but didn’t think a $3 product would be very long lasting or water resistant.

Review: stila Blushing Beauty Set - Warm

Biggest. Moneysaver. Ever.

#omgface *O*

Well, maybe not ever, but it's pretty darn great.

I like to look in CostCo for beauty products, they have some great makeup wipes and sometimes they have really great value sets! I love buying makeup sets, as they tend to give you a bit more bang for your buck.
I got this set at CostCo for $10. Yes, that’s right.. $10!!!!! It has two Long Wear Lip Liners, a Convertible Color Dual Lip & Cheek cream, two eyeshadows and a small sharpener, just the right size for the lip liners.

Manicure Monday/Mini Money Saver Makeover

Happy Monday, Beauties!

I'm posting this a little late in the day (night!!), I know. I wanted to get the all clear from my friend Christina to post her photos! There's nothing worse than a friend posting photos of you without telling you and you didn't really want anyone to see them.. Like those random pics on facebook with your face all shiny or making a weird expression and hair a mess that you get tagged in a million times and everyone sees them before you can untag yourself.

But I digress, these photos are definitely nothing bad like that. I just wanted to be sure she was comfortable with me blogging about her!

On Friday I went over to Christina's to do a mini eyebrow makeover. She was heading out to an anniversary dinner with her husband that night and wanted to look her best! I went over to give her a hand with them and also gave her a little manicure.

I think it's so much fun to get together with the girls and do some pampering. It kind of reminds me of when I was a teenager and we used to do makeover sleepovers. You're never too old for a bit of pampering, especially if you have little ones. It's all too easy to forget to take time for yourself and do those little things like eyebrows and nails, but those little things can really make a big difference in the way you feel about yourself! You could go to a salon, sure, but why spend all that money when you can do it at home with your friends?

Here is the mani :)

DSC_1217

DSC_1218

I used OPI Met On The Internet (this one is getting it's own post.. I have a story behind why I bought this gorgeous polish) and Nicole by OPI Love Your Life on the accent nail. She just wanted something simple and pretty and we thought this was really anniversary date night appropriate ;)

Eyebrows before:

DSC_1213

Eyebrows after:

DSC_1220

She has really light blonde hairs, so it was difficult to see them without a lot of light! We pulled over a lamp to help out the sun a little. She has great natural brows, so I just cleaned them up a bit and stuck with her natural shape.

We really had so much fun and our kids had a blast playing together. I think we should do regular Mama Makovers and Manis! It's a great Money Saver to do these things with your girlfriends instead of going to a salon! It might not turn out perfect, but you'll have a great time doing it :)

What's something you like to do to pamper yourself?

Review: e.l.f. Studio Pigment Eyeshadow in Golden Goddess

Hey Beauties!

I’m really excited to be reviewing this Studio Pigment Eyeshadow from e.l.f. because pigments are EVERYWHERE at the moment, in many different Summer beauty collections. The great thing about these little dynamos is that they are really versatile and can be used for a number of different looks, subtle or striking.

eyes lips face, or e.l.f., is a beauty brand that has a very low price point. Most of their products are in the $1 – $10 range and in this case a low price point doesn’t mean low quality. The quality on the e.l.f. products I’ve tried is actually pretty good. I’ve also read some great things about this pigment on the e.l.f. website.

That being said, does this Studio Pigment Eyeshadow live up to the hype?

DSC_0949

e.l.f.’s Studio line is marketed as more for professional use and is a bit more expensive than their Essentials line (although at around $3 a product it’s still not breaking the bank).

From the e.l.f. website:
Color Golden Goddess
Price $3.00
Weight 0.05oz/1.5g
Create a bold and beautiful statement with these jewel-toned, multi-dimensional pigments that impart lustrous high-color payoff and long-lasting wear. The buildable, powdery-fine formula blends seamlessly for ease of application and can be layered for a variety of looks. From soft and neutral to strikingly colorful these six silky and shimmery shades compliment every eye color for a fun, flirty look. Includes Eyeshadow Brush.
Ingredients:
Mica, Nylon-12, Born Nitdide, Silica, Dimethicone, Tocopheryl Acetate.

Yimane Nail Shorts Story Pink Crackle Polish from Born Pretty

Hey Beauties :)

Another nail polish post!! I can’t get enough of it lately :) I have fallen in love with crackle polishes, they just look so interesting and can be layered so many different ways. O.P.I.’s Shatter range is probably the most popular right now, but many other brands have been bringing out their own take on crackle polishes.

I recently got this pink crackle by Yimane Nail from the Born Pretty Store. I’m pretty sure it’s an exclusively Asian brand because I’ve never heard of it or seen it before. It may be exclusive to Born Pretty, who knows? I was a little wary of buying it, since it’s an unknown brand, but Born Pretty has had good quality every time I’ve purchased something from them so I thought I’d give it a go. And since it was only $4.55 I didn’t think it was much of a risk.

The bottle is just like Nicole by OPI’s bottle and has a pretty heart design on the front.

DSC_0666

And yes. It is actually called Shorts Story. A story about shorts, maybe? Well, it is Spring!

DSC_0691

Being lazy, I layered it over Zoya Kimmy which I was already wearing. I had a bit of a chip on my middle finger, but once I layered the crackle over it and it was dry it was pretty much unnoticable.

It dried to the exact colour of the bottle, however I don’t really like the matte finish so I put topcoat over it. That darkened the colour a bit, as you can see in the photo below.

Index and Middle with topcoat, Ring and Pinky without topcoat.
DSC_0653

With flash.
DSC_0646

This is with topcoat on all nails. Even though the colour is a bit darker, I still love it! It looks beautiful with the sparkly red of Zoya Kimmy peeking out.

In direct sunlight
DSC_0722

This one is most true to actual colour. BEAUTIFUL! I can’t stop looking at my nails :)

DSC_0729

The quality of this polish is really good. It crackles quite similarly to O.P.I. Black Shatter, but the formula isn’t as thick. For only $4.55 and free shipping, this is DEFINITELY a cheaper alternative to O.P.I.’s Shatters, although you won’t get the same colours or formula (think the red jelly shatter).

They come in a range of shades and I will definitely be picking up a few more. It looks like they have two different types of crackle polish, this one which dries with larger cracks - more similar to O.P.I.’s Shatter - and another one in a different bottle which dries with very fine cracks and more of the nail polish intact.

These are available at Born Pretty for various prices, $4.91 for this style of polish (some are on sale at the moment) and $4.02 for the other style (smaller cracks). This is a definite MONEYSAVER for me, as most crackle polishes (including Shatter which this is similar to) retail higher.
I have never had a problem ordering with Born Pretty, their customer service is good and the shipping is pretty fast considering it’s coming from Singapore. I have heard they had a few glitches with their first free stamping plate giveaway, but I think it’s because they are a new company and are still getting used to everything and working out their system.

Have you tried crackle polishes? Have you ever bought anything from Born Pretty?
