My Winter Hair Care Routine: How I Keep Dry Hair Hydrated

Press Sample I Bought This

In the Winter months dryness is the biggest issue for me when it comes to my hair, ESPECIALLY living in inland California, closer to the high desert areas... It is DRY, DRY, DRY and using the central heating on top of that. Also the tendency to not wash my hair for days (it's cold!) and ball it up in a bun adds tangles and rough texture to the equation. So, what to do when your hair looks like the rat's nest from hell and it's so dry that you can practically hear it crackle? You (or er.. more specifically *I*) start adopting a moisture-filled hair care routine which incorporates a range of hydrating products. One thing I have to be careful of is using products that leave my fine hair feeling greasy and heavy and these ones (when used the way I use them) leave my hair feeling soft and smooth, without the added grease.

1. nuNAAT Garlic Magic shampoo and conditioner

Use: Every 2/3 days

I've reviewed these before, and they've become my regular shampoo and conditioner. I just love the way they leave my hair feeling clean and soft and get rid of any oil or product build up without being too harsh.

2. Coconut Oil

Use: Once a week

You may have seen my Ombre Hair post where I use Coconut Oil to protect my hair from being fried by bleach. As well as being a wonderful protectant, it's also a great deep conditioning treatment. I usually saturate my hair until it's well coated, but not dripping, wrap it in saran wrap and either leave it in overnight or leave it in for a few hours and hit it with my hairdryer so that it really penetrates. Then I wash it out thoroughly with shampoo and conditioner.

3. Parnevu Hair Mayonnaise

Use: Once or twice a week

This is a beautifully thick and creamy product that I use as a mask or deep conditioning leave-in treatment. The main ingredients are Olive Oil, Egg Protein and African Herbs and you can see the little bits of herbs in there. This is a heavier treatment, so I try not to put too much on at once. I leave it in for a few hours and wash it out, or use a little bit as a leave in treatment on damp hair. It gives my hair that extra boost of moisture during the week.

4. Parnevu Extra Dry Leave In Conditioner for Normal Hair

Use: Daily

I use this leave in for every day styling, I put a little bit in damp hair and comb it through before applying heat or letting it air dry. It detangles, gets rid of frizz and my hair feels soft and smooth. I've noticed less hair in my comb when using this, so I do believe it helps with breakage. I also use this when I dye my hair, I mix it with the dye and apply it to my hair. It locks in the colour, gives me an extra conditioning treatment without being too heavy.

These are the products I've been using regularly throughout the Winter and they've helped my hair stay in good condition, shiny and soft even through all the dry weather, indoor heating, bleaching and dyeing!

Do you switch up your hair routine in Winter? What are some of the products you prefer to use in the colder motnhs?

nuNAAT Garlic Magic Hair Collection Review

Press Sample

My hair is a strange beast. It's fine and wavy, slow growing and thin in places since I had my last child, oily at the roots and dry at the mid-lengths and ends. I also have a sensitive scalp. I have a hard time finding hair products that are moisturising, gentle on my scalp, but still light enough that they don't weigh my hair down. I previously tried nuNAAT's Keratin system, but as smooth as it made my hair feel, it also weighed it down and made it feel stringy. I would recommend it more for thick hair and I use it on my two boys who have very thick, curly hair. I was still searching for a system that would help my wayward locks, when I received the nuNAAT Garlic collection.

From the nuNAAT website:

The collection includes:

Garlic Extra Force Shampoo (16.9 oz)
The shampoo has a nice lather, without too many bubbles. I prefer this, as any shampoo that lathers up into a lot of bubbles usually strips more of your natural oils and is harsher on your hair and scalp. This shampoo cleaned nicely without leaving my hair feeling too dry and stripped. I actually washed once and didn't have time to condition, so I just shampooed and then put the leave in styling cream in and it was fine.

Garlic Extra Force Conditioner (16.9 oz)
This conditioner is pretty creamy, without feeling heavy. It's best for fine hair that doesn't need a lot of detangling, as it isn't as thick and creamy as a heavier detangling conditioner. THis works fine on my hair, but not as well on my boys' very thick, very curly hair. It left my hair feeling smooth and soft, without weighing it down at all.

Garlic Extra Force Styling Cream (10.5 oz)
The bottle says 'Leave In', and it's more of a leave in conditioner than a styling product. It tames frizz and makes it easier to comb through damp hair. I like the lightweight feel and it never leaves my hair feeling greasy or sticky.

Garlic Magic Hair Mask (17.6 oz)
I love this hair mask, again it's better for fine hair and doesn't leave hair weighed down. I use it when I'm dying my hair to dilute the hair colour, and it makes my hair super soft and smooth and locks in the dye.

From the first use, I liked the way this collection made my scalp and hair feel. It definitely is a more lightweight collection, more suitable for my fine hair and oily scalp. All the products have a light, floral scent and don't smell like garlic at all. I am so happy to have found a system that works for my combination of hair problems, and my scalp feels healthier and less oily.

In the Before/After picture, you can see my roots are less oily and clumped together and my hair is smoother and less frizzy.

I will definitely be keeping this as my go-to hair routine, although I test other products as well. If you have fine or oily hair, weak and slow-growing strands, I definitely recommend this collection. If your hair is thicker and dry, try out nuNAAT's Keratin line.

nuNAAT Brazilian Keratin Collection - Review & Giveaway!

Bleaching my hair a number of times has left it with a somewhat straw-like consistency. 'Hay-esque' might be an appropriate term. So, in order to restore some moisture and discourage random passers-by from assuming I am wearing horse feed on my head, I tried out the NAAT Brazilian Keratin Collection by nuNAAT, which is recommended for daily use on chemically processed hair.

The collection includes-
L to R: Deep Moisturizing Shampoo, Deep Conditioner, Liquid Keratin Leave-in Reconstructor, Intensive Hair Mask and Serum Ultra Shine.

From nuNAAT.com:

  • Works with all hair types
  • Repairs cuticle damage
  • Regenerates and strengthens hair fibers
  • Restores natural shine and softness
  • Seals hair cuticles
  • Reduces volume and frizz
  • Makes hair resilient and healthy
  • Formaldehyde and sodium chloride free
Great for every day use. Also recommended for those who have professionally relaxed/straightened hair to keep hair at its best between touch-ups.

From the very first time using the Deep Moisturizing Shampoo and Deep Conditioner, I noticed the texture of my hair change. It was silkier and much easier to comb through. I then used a small amount of the Liquid Keratin Leave-in Reconstructor and allowed it to dry naturally. I had a lot less frizz than usual and my hair was a LOT more hydrated. Usually you don't notice results this drastic after the first use, but honestly nuNAAT surprised me.

I have used the Serum Ultra Shine a couple of times, but I have extremely fine hair and it seems to weigh it down a bit. I think I may be using too much, because it's concentrated stuff. The serum is specifically designed to be used with a flat iron, as the heat activates the ingredients and locks in shine.

The Intensive Hair Mask is really creamy and thick and hydrates well. I put it in before having a nice, long bath and then washed it out in the shower. It detangled my hair effortlessly and left it feeling soft and smooth.

Intensive Hair Mask

I really like the scent of all the products, it's light and sweet without being too strong. I think companies these days are realising that a lot of women don't like strong, overpowering scents (like Granny florals!) and are adjusting their products accordingly. I also like the fact that their products are formaldehyde and sodium chloride free.

Soft and shiny, no more straw!

Overall, I felt that the NAAT Brazilian Keratin Collection really did make a big difference to my hair. It's noticeably softer, smoother and easier to comb through. There's less frizz and my hair is more manageable. I do wish I could get a bit more shine to my hair, but I know that the lighter your hair is, the less shine you get anyway. I think I'll have to use a lighter hand when applying the serum and see if that improves the result I get. If you are looking to restore moisture and lessen frizz, I think this is a great haircare collection. It may not be ideal for oily or very thin hair, as it is designed to reduce frizziness, which may weigh down those hair types.

nuNAAT products are sold at Walgreens, Sallys, and beauty supply stores nationwide or drugstore.com online.
