DIY Ombre Hair using Box Dye

>>>>Click here to view my updated (and less damaging process) DIY Ombre!<<<<

Ombre, Ombre, Ombre!

Trying this trend at home can seem a bit daunting, but it's not too difficult if you just follow the steps and is definitely cheaper than going to a salon. I've been wanting to diy ombre hair using box dye for a while and finally took the plunge last weekend. I had some dark regrowth from dyeing my hair a light brown shade previously, so instead of just bleaching the ends, I followed a tutorial I googled but I wanted a more dramatic result than the person achieved. I mean, what's the point in killing your hair and scalp just to get a barely noticable result?

This was my hair colour before:

So, Step 1!

Using Clairol Born Blonde, I followed the instructions and fried my hair for 90 mins until it turned this ABSOLUTELY stunning trailer park orange.

I posted this photo on Facebook and my mother almost had a heart attack lol!

Step 2: I then used this light ash brown to get rid of the horrible orange blonde and give my hair that cooler ash tone that is so popular in gyaru styles.

Because of the bleach, the light brown ended up being an ash blonde.

Step 3: I gave my scalp a break and did the third dye process the next morning. I applied this light natural brown on my roots, and blended it almost halfway down, being careful to not get any on the ends of my hair.

I left the ends untouched, so I would still have that gorgeous ash blonde at the tips.

After I washed it out, this is the result!

I'm completely in love with it! It turned out exactly as I'd hoped :) It looks a bit lighter in the sun, but you can definitely see the gradiation.

BTW my scalp now has flaky patches from getting the crap burnt out of it, bleaching it and dyeing it twice. A friend told me to expect major dandruff for the next week -_- Because my hair is now super dried out from all the processing, I got a leave in treatment to (hopefully) restore some moisture.

I've heard good things about this treatment, so I'll let you all know how it goes! I have used it once and liked it, so here's hoping it continues to meet my expectations ;)

Have you DIY-ed a favourite hair trend at home before? Or do you prefer to go to a salon to liven up your locks?

I only bleached the tips of myhair & i now have orange hair would the ash brown lighten as well as remove orange in my hair? I See yours came out great but mine is oranger:/

  4. Yes, I would recommend getting a very light ash brown and going over the tips to tone down some of the orangeness. Because it's not a blonde colour, it shouldn't have the yellowy tones that most bleaches give you.

I've also heard using an ash color will make it turn green:/ what brand do you recommend me using? I just dont want to end up w/ brown hair again:) your post inspired me to go ombre. Im usually the simple one color all over kind of girl.. but I really like the ombre effect.. so I de ided to take a chance lol

  6. I usually use Loreal, either Preference or Feria. John Frieda Precision foam is pretty good too! If you're worried about it going too brown, use a dark ash blonde. If you're hair is orangey already, then the ash will definitely not turn green.

This looks awesome! I love ombrés, having had my hair dyed as such for over a year, although my colors are a little unconventional. I go get mine done at a salon only because my friend works in one. Ps, found your blog through the Beauty Blogazon group :)

Because I'm planning to dye my black hair with the clariol born blonde then dye it with the next product u used. Do u think it will work ?

  12. I did all three steps over two days, just because it was late at night and I wanted to give my scalp a break before dying it again. It should work the same on black hair, my roots were very dark brown/almost black and they turned almost as light as the rest of my hair. Once I put the ash colour over the orangey blonde, it was all one shade. I would recommend you using an ash blonde after using the Born Blonde instead of an ash brown like I used, since you're looking to go ash blonde and your hair is a bit darker than mine.

  13. You might need to leave on the Born Blonde a little longer, until you get it as light as you want it. Don't worry if it's orange/yellow blonde, because the second step will get rid of that.

  14. Your hair looks amazing!! What method did you use to blend the final brown from your roots down? Just fingers or a brush? Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  15. Just fingers. It's pretty easy, you just have to make sure it's not all at the same level so it looks more natural and blended.

  16. Hey where did you get your contacts from? and did you leave the ash brown in for the recommended time? Cause i have bleached my hair and have been putting ash blondes over it and its not getting any better but i dont want to have brown hair

  17. Hi :) You can read about my contacts here http://www.ishahxbeauty.com/2011/08/gyaru-on-budget-circle-lenses-part-2-g.html I got them from Kiwiberry1 Collection. I usually leave dye on for 15-30 minutes longer than the recommended time. Don't worry if you dye it and it goes a little darker than what you want to go for, since it's bleached it will fade to a lighter colour. You could also use a violet/blue toner to tone down any yellow shades.
