Review: e.l.f. Studio Cream Eyeliner in Plum Purple

I’m an eyeliner girl. I’m pretty much addicted. For years, it was the one thing I'd have to be wearing before I left the house (now it's mascara! but I still love me some eyeliner). Black, brown, gold, blue, green, I love ‘em all. I’ve lined my waterline for as long as I’ve been using makeup, and I used to like doing winged liner because it made my eyes look more ‘asian’ (ok I still do that).

I’ve used a few different types (pencil, liquid, felt tip, gel) and there are pros and cons to all of them. Cream or gel eyeliner is easy to use and pigmented, but can be prone to creasing and fading so I don’t often use it.

I had read some good reviews about the e.l.f. Studio Cream Eyeliner online, but didn’t think a $3 product would be very long lasting or water resistant.

It comes with it’s own brush, like the Studio Pigment Eyeshadow, but this one is a little slanted eyeliner brush. The packaging is the same also, that ugly little bulky square jar.. Looks a bit cheaply made, but I really don’t care that much about packaging as long as the product is good! This is unlikely to go anywhere except on my dresser, so it doesn’t really have to look pretty.

This shade is plum purple (I guess they renamed it just Purple on the website), a true deep plum colour. It’s a purple that’s on the warmer side so it gives it a slightly brown tone. The texture is really soft and creamy, more so than the Urban Decay Ink for Eyes liners that I’ve used. This made it a lot smoother to put on, but I noticed that the brush tends to pick up way too much product, so I would probably use a different one for application and use a lighter hand.

You can see here the dents the brush made in the product… Yes, it is that soft and creamy!

It was a bit difficult to get a thinner line using that dinky brush, as you can see from my repeated thick swatches. I could see it being a bit messy on the eye, but by using a different (better) brush it would probably solve this problem.

The texture is lovely, it doesn’t skip or tug at all over the skin. It’s very pigmented and dries to a satiny finish with a very tiny amount of teeny tiny sparkle that’s only obvious if you are about 10cm away from it (I hope nobody other than my husband/kids ever get THAT close!). It stays on very well, once it dries it’s on for a good, long while. I lightly rubbed over the swatches and they didn’t budge.. ran water over them and again, they didn’t budge. They did remove with warm water and a bit of rubbing, but for a cream liner it was pretty exceptional.

Overall
Pros:
  • Smooth, creamy texture, doesn’t skip or tug
  • Easy to apply, glides over the skin
  • Good colour payoff
  • Long lasting and water resistant
Cons:
  • Very soft, easy to pick up too much product which could make it messy to put on
  • Brush is pretty useless
  • Packaging isn’t very pretty
Timesaver/Moneysaver?
Definite Moneysaver!! This is great quality and great value for money.

Want/Need/No Thanks?
This is a Want for me. I use liquid liners more often, since they give you a more precise line, but this is probably going into the favourites line up. I love that they have so many great colours, I’ll definitely be purchasing the Teal Tease!

Thank you! Not sure why they bother including the brush, but the product as a whole is awesome :) I want to pick up coffee too!
